TURBT involves inserting a resectoscope through the urethra into the bladder to visualise and remove visible tumours. The tumour is shaved off using an electric loop and sent for pathological examination. No incisions are made, and the procedure is performed under anaesthesia. A temporary urinary catheter is inserted at the end of the surgery.
- Visible bladder tumour on imaging or cystoscopy
- Blood in urine (haematuria)
- Suspected bladder cancer
- Follow-up treatment for recurrent tumours
- Minimally invasive with no external cuts
- Allows diagnosis and initial treatment in one session
- Quick recovery and short hospital stay
- Effective for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer
- Performed under general or spinal anaesthesia
- A resectoscope is passed into the bladder via the urethra
- The tumour is resected in layers using a heated electric wire loop
- Bleeding vessels are cauterised to prevent recurrence
- Tissue is collected for pathology
- A catheter may be placed temporarily after surgery

- Hospital stay of 1–2 days depending on bleeding and tumour size
- Catheter is usually removed the following day
- Instillation of chemo or immunotherapy drugs directly into the bladder is performed within 24 hours of TURBT surgery for high risks cancer
- Avoid heavy activity and straining for 2–3 weeks
- Follow-up cystoscopy in 6–12 weeks to monitor recurrence

Frequently Asked Questions
It is effective for early-stage superficial and small volume bladder cancers, but close follow-up is essential due to risk of recurrence.
Depending on tumour grade and depth, further treatment with instillation of chemo or immuno therapy or repeat TURBT may be needed.
TURBT removes the cancer containing superficial layer of cells. New cells will grow over the areas that had been removed. Hence, the capacity and function of the bladder will be normal after several weeks.
Most patients recover quickly and can resume normal activity in a few days.
