Treatment Options & Related Procedures
Management focuses on identifying reversible causes, improving sperm production and supporting conception through medical or surgical means.
- Lifestyle modification – Balanced diet, smoking cessation, weight management and avoiding heat exposure.
- Hormonal therapy – Oral agents (Clomiphene, Letrozole) or injectable FSH/LH when hormone imbalance is detected.
- Supplements – Antioxidants, zinc, carnitine and arginine to enhance sperm function.
- Varicocele Repair (Microsurgical Varicocelectomy) – Corrects enlarged scrotal veins to improve sperm count and motility.
- Varicocele Embolisation – Minimally invasive radiological option, often used for recurrent varicocele.
- TESA / PESA (Sperm Aspiration) – Retrieval of sperm directly from the testes or epididymis under local anaesthesia for use in assisted reproduction.
- Micro-TESE (Microsurgical Testicular Sperm Extraction) – Advanced technique to locate viable sperm in severe oligospermia or azoospermia cases.
- Assisted Reproductive Techniques (IVF / ICSI) – Performed in collaboration with reproductive-medicine specialists managing the female partner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Many cases improve with lifestyle changes, treatment, or surgery.
Not necessarily. Even men with low counts can father children with appropriate treatment. However, in cases of very low or very abnormal sperm counts, natural conception would be difficult.
Keeping the testis cooler by avoiding prolonged soaking in hot water and wearing loose underware can help improve sperm count.
Upon correction of life style or completion of surgery, sperm count would only improve after 2-3 months. Every sperm cycle takes about 3 months for new sperm to form.
